opinions needed

I have a question for you guys. I need opinions and any information if the church has an official opinion on the matter. I would like to know about cooking with alcohol. The alcohol burns out once the meat is cooked so no one is going to be getting buzzed from eating a pork roast marinated in sherry but still. Its one of those things that I am curious about. Especially since when I go back to school I will most likely be going to get my degree in culinary arts(again). So if any one has an opinion about it or know if any of our leaders as advised us in this topic I would really like to know.

If you want to cook with alcohol now there is a website I could suggest for subsitutes, but as for and "official" church opinion, I don't know.

I never thought really deeply about this until now. I think it's hard. I make a wine cake with dry sherry that is YUMMMY... Never attempted the batter and don't plan too. However, If you feel strong enough not to cook with it, better not be ordering Chicken marsala at restaurants either.

I cook and bake with all types of liquor. I just purchase the small amount for the specific dish so I don't have the remaining liquor in the house. Why create a potential temptation right? My mom had a locked up cabinet that she stored her cooking/baking alcoholic beverages and us kids never even thought of going in there but to each her own.

You would be surprised on how many really good recipes call for some sort of liquor or spirit. Seriously...a ton! The alcohol is cooked/baked/grilled out and the flavor is what remains.

I have not heard of anything regarding the church having a specific stance on the matter... I think this is one of those moments that they let us choose for ourselves on what we think is best for our families. I know some families that don't even allow herbal tea into their homes because the appearance is there for them. Not for me, I drink herbal teas and if the recipe calls for it I get the ingredient. I do not substitute.

Search your heart and do what you think is best. However, beware of seriously thinking of going to culinary school if you decide cooking with alcohol is an issue for you. You will be required to do so and the instructors will not allow substitutions. There is a reason they use these ingredients in the first place--the recipe does not come out the same (or at all) without them or with the substitutes.

I have never cooked with alcohol but its mostly because I didn't want to BUY it. I never have so why now? I don't think less though of any one who does. I eat stuff with cooked alcohol ALL the time. I love the flavor it has. so maybe I am a hypocrite, oh well. But I Just have never wanted to buy it....I agree with Lisa, every one has a different thought on this. I highly doubt the church has an official opinion, they don't usually on things like this. So.... search it out yourself and you will feel comfortable with the answers you get. =)
